3-2-1 rule for backups

At BuildIn3D we follow the 3-2-1 rule for backups as recommended by the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team. The rule is like a standard in the industry. It goes like this:

Keep at least three (3) copies of your data, and store two (2) backup copies on different storage media, with one (1) of them located offsite. To clarify, let’s take a look at each point of this rule.

Types of data that’s backed up

Instructions consists of files and db records. The files we call “Production data” and the db records we call “DB data“. The distinction is important as the same 3D model and building instruction could be converted in many different forms to be delivered to the user.

Where are the “Production data”, “DB data” and the backups located

To adhere to the 3-2-1 rule above we’ve created a number of backup servers.

Production data is in USA on servers in a data center operated by AWS. Servers are managed by AWS.

DB data is in USA on AWS servers in a data center operated. Servers are managed by Heroku.

Backup usa-1 is in USA on servers in a data center operated by AWS. Servers are managed by AWS.

Backup bg-elvis is in Bulgaria on servers in a data center operated by Superhosting. Machines are managed by Axlessoft.

Backup bg-hendrix is in Bulgaria on servers in a data center operated by Axlessoft. Machines are managed by Axlessoft.

Regularity of backup

Production data is synced to Backup usa-1 at least once (1) a day.

Production data is synced to Backup bg-elvis at least once (2) a day.

DB data is synced to Backup bg-elvis at least once (1) a day.

DB data is synced to Backup bg-hendrix at least once (1) a day.
